The game we'll be vibe coding is a job simulator inspired by a popular game called PhD Simulator.

We'll be copying over the source code of the game, and changing some of the code using chatgpt to make it fit the “game” we want to create.

An example: a game about becoming the best chef in your local area. You overcome challenges (kitchen on fire, guest doesn't like your food, bad review from a critic) until you finally get your first Michelin star.

Instructions:

  1. Install Node.js: https://nodejs.org/en/download. It's better to install via the command line instead of an installer, but you can use the installer if it makes it easier.
  2. Download the code for PhD Simulator here: https://github.com/morriswmz/phd-game.
  3. Install vscode or cursor. Vscode: https://code.visualstudio.com/. Cursor: https://cursor.com/
  4. Open the code in vscode or cursor.
  5. We'll be editing the files in `phd-game/static/rulesets/default`. There are 6 files in total: attributes.yaml, events.yaml, gui.yaml, items.yaml, lang.yaml, status.yaml.
  6. Take all the files, and put it into chatgpt. Tell chatgpt exactly what kind of game you want. Free chatgpt only lets you upload 3 files, so if you don't have a subscription you can use something like Manus. Feel free to use other tools like Claude as well.
  7. Example prompt:

These are files for a game called phd simulator. Take these files, and update them. We'll be making a different game called “Product Manager simulator”. Here are some of the details of the game:

    • Attributes: product launched, users paying for product, hope boost, etc
    • Events: job started, probation anxiety, put on performance improvement plan, boss left company, product launched, product launch criticized, relaunched product, work on PRD, PRD approved, PRD meeting, fired, etc.
    • Items: come up with these on your own
    • Lang: come up with these on your own
    • Status: write based on the code
  8. Once you have the files, copy and paste them into the codebase using vscode or cursor.
  9. To start the game, first do “npm install” in vscode or cursor, then “npm run build && npm start”. Navigate to http://localhost:8000 in your browser to view the game.
  10. Helpful debugging to ask chatgpt: `Some events don't have corresponding text in lang.yaml. For example, “message.excited” doesn't have a corresponding thing in lang.yaml`
